    The effect of different doses of polyadenylic and polyuridylic acids (poly A:U) was studied in control rats and in rats exposed to hypoxia. In the control rats, administration of different doses of poly A:U did not change the thickness of the epiphyseal plate or increase the incorporation of 3H-phenylalanine as judged using radioautography.     Electrical and ferroelectric properties of rare-earth-doped Na0.5Bi4.0RE0.5Ti4O15 (RE = Eu, Gd and Dy) thin films

    A study of the structural, electrical and ferroelectric properties of layered Aurivillius-type Na0.5Bi4.5Ti4O15 (NaBTi) and Na0.5Bi4.0RE0.5Ti4O15 (RE = Eu, Gd and Dy) thin films is reported. These films were fabricated on Pt-coated Si(100) substrates by using a chemical solution deposition method followed by a heat treatment. The rare-earth elements used as dopants, such as Eu, Gd and Dy, were found to be effective in improving the leakage current densities and the ferroelectric properties of the layered Na0.5Bi4.5Ti4O15 thin films without affecting their original Aurivillius structures. Based on the measured ferroelectric polarization-electric field (P−E) hysteresis loops, we found that the Gd-doped NaBTi thin film, among all the films, exhibited the highest ferroelectric remnant polarization of 2Pr = 37.4 μC/cm2 and a low coercive electric field of 2Ec = 187 kV/cm at an applied electric field of 475 kV/cm. Furthermore, the lowest value of the leakage current density of 6.12×107 A/cm2 at an applied electric field of 100 kV/cm was measured for the Gd-doped NaBTi thin film

    Making top-heavy IMFs from canonical IMFs near the galactic centre

    We show that dynamical evolution in a strong (Galactic Centre-like) tidal field can create clusters that would appear to have very top-heavy IMFs. The tidal disruption of single star forming events can leave several bound ‘clusters’ spread along 20 pc of the orbit within 1-2 Myr. These surviving (sub)clusters tend to contain an over-abundance of massive stars, with low-mass stars tending to be spread along the whole ‘tidal arm’. Therefore observing a cluster in a strong tidal field with a top-heavy IMF might well not mean the stars formed with a top-heavy IMF

    Introduction to Holographic Superconductors

    These lectures give an introduction to the theory of holographic superconductors. These are superconductors that have a dual gravitational description using gauge/gravity duality. After introducing a suitable gravitational theory, we discuss its properties in various regimes: the probe limit, the effects of backreaction, the zero temperature limit, and the addition of magnetic fields. Using the gauge/gravity dictionary, these properties reproduce many of the standard features of superconductors. Some familiarity with gauge/gravity duality is assumed.     Role of dietary concentrates on the venison quality of Sika deer (Cervus nippon)

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of feed concentrate level on carcass characteristics and meat quality of sika deer (Cervus nippon). A total of 16 sika deer (mean bodyweight 30 kg) were randomly assigned to one of two treatments, namely Treatment 1 (T1): fed concentrate at 1.5% of total bodyweight); and Treatment 2 (T2): fed concentrate ad libitum. Both groups had free access to roughage (hay) and water. Each group was fed concentrate twice daily (at 09h00 and 16h00) for eight months. The fat concentration of venison from deer in T2 was significantly greater than that of T1. However, fat loss through cooking, shear force, and pH did not differ significantly between the two groups. Water-binding capacity of venison from deer in T1 was significantly greater (2.83%) than that of T2. Colour parameters a* (redness) and b* (yellowness) were significantly greater for venison from T2 than for deer in T1. Likewise, cholesterol concentration of venison from deer in T2 was significantly greater than for deer in T1. However, the cholesterol concentration in venison from deer that were subjected to both treatments was less than that of meat from other livestock species. In conclusion, the results of this study provide a baseline to estimate fodder cost standards to produce sika deer venison, and would aid commercial deer farmers in developing optimal management strategies for venison production.Keywords: carcass composition, concentrate feeding, meat qualit

    Time and Amplitude of Afterpulse Measured with a Large Size Photomultiplier Tube

    We have studied the afterpulse of a hemispherical photomultiplier tube for an upcoming reactor neutrino experiment. The timing, the amplitude, and the rate of the afterpulse for a 10 inch photomultiplier tube were measured with a 400 MHz FADC up to 16 \ms time window after the initial signal generated by an LED light pulse. The time and amplitude correlation of the afterpulse shows several distinctive groups. We describe the dependencies of the afterpulse on the applied high voltage and the amplitude of the main light pulse. The present data could shed light upon the general mechanism of the afterpulse.Comment: 11 figure

    Autonomous pipeline monitoring and maintenance system: a RFID-based approach

    Pipeline networks are one of the key infrastructures of our modern life. Proactive monitoring and frequent inspection of pipeline networks are very important for sustaining their safe and efficient functionalities. Existing monitoring and maintenance approaches are costly and inefficient because pipelines can be installed in large scale and in an inaccessible and hazardous environment. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID)-based Autonomous Maintenance system for Pipelines, called RAMP, which combines robotic, sensing, and RFID technologies for efficient and accurate inspection, corrective reparation, and precise geo-location information. RAMP can provide not only economical and scalable remedy but also safe and customizable solution. RAMP also allows proactive and corrective monitoring and maintenance of pipelines. One prominent advantage of RAMP is that it can be applied to a large variety of pipeline systems including water, sewer, and gas pipelines. Simulation results demonstrate the feasibility and superior performance of RAMP in comparison to the existing pipeline monitoring systems

    Stochastic String Motion Above and Below the World Sheet Horizon

    We study the stochastic motion of a relativistic trailing string in black hole AdS_5. The classical string solution develops a world-sheet horizon and we determine the associated Hawking radiation spectrum. The emitted radiation causes fluctuations on the string both above and below the world-sheet horizon. In contrast to standard black hole physics, the fluctuations below the horizon are causally connected with the boundary of AdS. We derive a bulk stochastic equation of motion for the dual string and use the AdS/CFT correspondence to determine the evolution a fast heavy quark in the strongly coupled N=4\N=4 plasma. We find that the kinetic mass of the quark decreases by ΔM=−γλT/2\Delta M=-\sqrt{\gamma \lambda}T/2 while the correlation time of world sheet fluctuations increases by γ\sqrt{\gamma}.Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures; v2 final version, small changes, references adde
